THE RESCUE PLAN:  Our in-house “Fall Protection Expert” Charlie Brumfield has a lot to say this week about the importance of having an effective well thought out “Rescue Plan” and making sure the team is trained on the plan…

Greetings to ALL!,

This week we take a look at “Rescue Planning”   Personnel that that are Working at Heights have a lot to think about like the weather, the equipment they are using to perform the task, the pressures they feel to accomplish the task in a timely fashion.

So many things to think about, RIGHT?

We as Safety Professionals really need to help out our work force by reminding them that they need to slow down and think about something very important

What is your rescue plan?

In the past I have reviewed many rescue plans and I have been shocked to see on a written team risk assessment (JSA) form a rescue plan that simply stated “Call the Rescue Team” or “Call 911”.

When I see that, it scares the crap out of me, so I stop them and coach them on the importance of a “rescue plan” and the roles each plays in the event of an emergency. I explain to them that calling the rescue team or “911” is vital but it is only a piece to their plan not their entire plan, or at least it shouldn’t be.

All personnel working at heights have to be trained to understand that THEY (Each Person involved in the task) are one most vital parts to that rescue plan.

We as trainers have to ensure that we empathize that rescues have to begin in mere seconds and waiting around for the rescue team to arrive is not an option. We have to empower our people with the knowledge that they are part of the rescue team, “A VERY VITAL PART” of that TEAM.

One answer to this concern in my opinion is providing the best training possible and making sure that our people understand the importance of having the proper fall equipment that is required for the task at hand to our work force, in order to perform the task “SAFELY”.

It is imperative that SUPERVISORS and SAFETY PERSONNEL audit those team risk assessment forms or JHA’s or JSA’s or whatever form they are using, because when they understand your expectations then those expectations will become theirs. Together we can complete these difficult tasks to assure that “Everyone Goes Home Safe & Healthy Everyday”
